HSE Guidance on Cleanliness of Cooling Systems on Removal of Pack

The HSE has recently released new guidance in relation to the cleaning of cooling towers. If your company operates a cooling tower, we would like to advise you of the HSE expectations in respect to compliance with L8 and specifically Pack Removal.

The guidance can be found at www.hse.gov.uk/legionnairesdisease/coolingtowers.htm. Site Management must now be able to demonstrate that the system/tower is clean and so present a reduced risk from exposure to Legionella. The guidance expands on the relevant paragraphs of L8 (ref. para 138) and requires assessment of the cleanliness of the system/tower. If Pack cannot be removed from the tower supplementary control measures must be put in place. If you have any doubt regarding your responsibilities here, please contact your HSE Inspector or your local ELGA Process Water Consultant for guidance.

Legionella Control Association (LCA) and Legislative Requirements

We would also like to remind you that the legislative requirements for the control of Legionellosis puts the responsibility for compliance with the owner/operator of water systems, as per the LCA Code of Practice document. If any changes have occurred to your operation that might affect your Control Programme or you have any queries relating to your Compliance, please book onto a course or contact us.
